Charel Kid Upsets 1-5 Favorite Stolis Winner in Grade 1, $202,200 Dash for Cash Derby

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009) –  Malinche Cattle Co. Inc.’s Charal Kid, trained by Eusevio Huitron, won the 11^th running of the Grade 1, $202,200 Dash for Cash Derby, for three-year-olds, over a fast track at Lone Star Park on Saturday night.

            With Santos Carrizales in the irons, Charal Kid quickly sprinted to the lead and never looked back in completing the 440-yard assignment in 21.498 seconds to earn a Speed Index of 98.  It was a ½-length back to odds-on favorite Stolis Winner, who encountered trouble leaving the gate, in second and another head back to third-place finisher Fearless Fritz.

            “I have a lot of respect for the runner-up,” said winning jockey Santos Carrizales, “but my horse gave me everything he had and ran great tonight.”  

            In winning the Dash for Cash Derby, Charal Kid recorded his sixth victory from 13 career starts and, with the $80,880 winner’s share of the purse, he boosted his career earnings to $186,422.

            Charal Kid paid $15.80, $3.00 and $3.40, runner-up Stolis Winner returned $2.40 and $2.10, and Fearless Fritz paid $6.20 to show.  Shazooms Glory Dash, Plain Shady, Zupers Quick Dash, Mr. Jess Perrier, Jess Zoomin, and Its a Black Oak completed the order of finish.  Dashazoom was scratched.

Lone Star Park’s 2009 Quarter Horse Fall Meeting of Champions runs from Sept. 25 to Nov. 28. After opening weekend on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25-26, racing will be held every Thursday through Saturday, except Thursday, Nov. 26 when there will be no live racing due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
