GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Monday, May 26, 2014) – Grand Contender does it again! After winning the Grade III Texas Mile on April 26, the six-year-old gelding by Strong Contender, took the prize today in the Grade III Lone Star Park Handicap on a muddy track, making him the third horse in 18 years to claim both races in a single season. Dixie Dot Com won both in 2001 and Master Rick in 2013.

Owned by Maggi Moss and trained by Tom Amoss, Grand Contender breaking from post position number three, went straight to the front, set the pace and controlled the action from there drawing off to win by four lengths. Fractions were 24.32, 47.90 and 1:11.82. Final time for the mile and a sixteenth was 1:43.83.

Local rider Richard Eramia had the mount and carried high weight of 121 lbs.

“My horse went so easy, he was just galloping around,” said winning jockey Richard Eramia. “Around the last three-sixteenths he opened up.”

Grand Contender’s share of the purse was $122,000. With 8 wins from 22 career starts, he sports a total bankroll of $560,860.

Mutuels for the winner returned $2.80, $2.10 and $2.10. Second place went to Donoharm who returned $3.00 and $2.60. F J Uncle Vic was up for show returning $4.00. Called to Serve, He Has Bling and Texas Air completed the order of finish.

Additional Notes: TrainerKarl Broberg is holding a comfortable lead in the standings with 35 wins over Steve Asmussen, who has 23. Today was the last day as an apprentice for leading rider David Cabrera. With 35 wins, Cabrera is holding off a fast closing Luis Quinonez, who won four races today bumping him up to 34 wins.
