GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Sunday, June 8, 2014) – Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie hosted a crowd of 15,355 fans hoping to witness California Chrome become the 12th horse in history, and the first to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed did 36 years ago, but it was not to be. Tonalist was the victor of yesterday’s 146th Belmont Stakes, dashing the hopes of fans across the country once again. California Chrome finished in a tie for fourth place with Wicked Strong.

The crowd was the largest on hand for a Belmont Stakes Day at Lone Star Park since 2004 when 18,278, a track record, attended to witness hopeful Smarty Jones go for the crown. He also came up short.

Those 15,355 fans who attended Belmont Stakes Day yesterday wagered a track record $948,979 on the third leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. The previous record for bets on the Belmont Stakes was $913,309 in 2004, the year of Smarty Jones’ attempt.

A possible Triple Crown Sweep usually means big business for racetrack’s across the country. Wagering on the classic race at Lone Star Park increased 37.1 % from the $691,959 bet a year ago when no Triple Crown was on the line.

“We are delighted by the turnout of fans this year to witness a possible Triple Crown run for California Chrome,” said General Manager Scott Wells. “The increase in handle was a positive boost to business, though it was disappointing to see him [California Chrome] come up short.”

The same was the case for the on-track handle. A total of $2,474,310 was bet on-track yesterday which was the highest recorded on a Belmont Stakes Day since 2004.
