GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Friday, June 13, 2014) – Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie will host the third running of the $50,000 Guaranteed Lane’s End Stallion Scholarship Stakes Saturday. The Lane’s End is for Accredited Texas-bred fillies & mares, three-years-old and upward going seven and one half furlongs on the turf. It is the scheduled eighth race on the nine race card. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. First race post time is 6:35 p.m. Post time for the Lane’s End is 9:51 p.m. (CDT).
The $50,000 Lane’s End Stallion Scholarship Stakes is named in honor of William S. Farish, owner of Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, KY, and Lane’s End Texas near Hempstead. In 2012, Mr. Farish pledged $150,000 in three annual $50,000 donations, to the Texas Thoroughbred Educational Fund.
The Texas Thoroughbred Association established the Texas Thoroughbred Educational Fund in 2005. The Scholarship program provides qualified TTA members and their children with monetary assistance to help meet annual college education costs.
Mr. Farish, a Houston native, is a Texas Thoroughbred Association Lifetime Member and past president of the organization. He is also vice chairman of The Jockey Club and former ambassador to the Court of St. James
A field of 11 fillies and mares will go postward, each vying for the winners share of the $50k purse. Morning line favoritism (9-5) has been given to Smiles Golden Song, a five-year-old gray mare by My Golden Song. Owned by Sylvia Baird and trained by Larry Stroope, she ran third in a $30k optional claiming race in her most recent start here on May 3. Her record so far this year is one win, one second and two thirds from four starts. She won the San Jacinto Stakes last January, placed in the Tomball Stakes in February, and was up for show in the Jersey Lily in March. All three efforts were at Sam Houston Race Park.
The Karl Broberg trained Molly’s Honour, owned by Joey Keith Davis, is 50% on turf. Her two wins from four starts over the surface were here at Lone Star Park last year. And the four-year-old filly by Etesaal, placed in her last attempt on the Lone Star turf course in a one-mile optional claiming May 1, defeating Smiles Golden Song who finished third.
Lasting Bubbles just missed by a nose to a 12-1 shot in last year’s renewal of the Lane’s End. Owned by Judy Peek and trained by Kevin Peek, the six-year-old Pulling Punches mare, though 0-6 on turf, is on the edge of a break-through. She is fresh off of a 4¼ length victory in the Wayne Hanks Memorial here on April 12.
Thegirlinthatsong looks intriguing. The three-year-old filly by My Golden Song has won her last two starts, a one mile turf allowance on May 1 and the Texas Stallion Stakes on May 10, both here at Lone Star. She also has the services of leading rider David Cabrera, who took off of Smiles Golden Song for this race. Thegirlinthatsong is owned by Anjo Racing Inc. and trained by Andy Konkoly.
The field from the rail out with jockey and morning line odds in parentheses is: Smiles Golden Song (Dakota Wood, 9-5); Margarita On Rocks (Eguard A. Tejera, 30-1); Triplemental (Lindey Wade, 12-1); Lasting Bubbles (Luis. S. Quinonez, 5-1); Savannah’s Keeper (Ivan Arellano, 15-1); Mescaleress (Larry Taylor, 20-1); Shezararebird (Benito Morales); Expect Royalty (Ivan Vargas Diego, 8-1); Thegirlinthatsong (David Cabrera, 15-1); Sassy N Special (Gerardo Mora, 12-1) and Molly’s Honour (Cliff Berry, 5-2).
