Just four years shy of a century ago a horse named Sir Barton won three classic Thoroughbred races for three-year-olds, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes which are known as the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. He became the first horse to achieve this accomplishment considered the greatest of a Thoroughbred race horse. The year was 1919 when Sir Barton won these three classic races, and since then only 10 others have won those three races and become Triple Crown Champion. The last to accomplish this was Affirmed in 1978. In the 37 years it’s been since Affirmed earned the Crown 13 others have had the chance by winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness stakes only to come up short in the Belmont Stakes, the most recent of which was California Chrome last year.

All hopes are on this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner American Pharoah to win the Belmont Stakes Saturday and become the 12th Triple Crown Champion of all time.
