GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Thursday, June 9, 2016) – The Triple Crown isn’t on the line this year, nor will the Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist be competing, but that doesn’t mean the 148th running of the Belmont Stakes won’t be exciting! THE BELMONT STAKES

The Belmont Stakes, known as the third jewel of the Triple Crown, is the oldest of the three classic races. It has been contested 147 times since it’s inception in 1847. It is also the longest of the three races at 1 ½ miles. The Kentucky Derby is 1 ¼ miles and the Preakness is 1 3/16 miles.

Though Saturday’s 148th edition doesn’t have a Triple Crown contender on the line, it does have local connections. Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, a three-year-old son of Curlin will be racing for a second classic victory for his owners Matt Bryan of Flower Mound (Big Chief Racing) and Ronny Ortowski of Fort Worth (Rocking O Ranch).
Bryan’s business, M. G. Bryan Equipment Company is located here in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Another local connection…Lone Star Park’ all-time leading trainer Steve Asmussen has two in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. They are Gettysburg and Creator.
