  Kentucky Derby Hat Contest, Mint Juleps, Family Fun Park, Live Music and More! 

 GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Wednesday, May 3, 2017) – Don your hats and your best Derby fashion and join us here at Lone Star Park for the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby this Saturday, May 6. Here you can sip on a Mint Julep, see and be seen and it’s the only place around where you can watch, wager and win on the famed “Run for the Roses”! The Derby will be simulcast live from Churchill Downs, plus we have 10 live Thoroughbred races are scheduled. Grandstand gates open early at 10:30 a.m. and the Bar & Book opens at 8:30 a.m. First race post time is 1:35 p.m. Simulcast of the Kentucky Derby is approximately 5:46 p.m.  All times CDT.

Schedule of Derby Weekend Events at Lone Star Park  

Friday, May 5 

Bar & Book opens at 8:30 a.m. for those who wish to catch the entire card from Churchill Downs, featuring the Kentucky Oaks, the female version of the Derby. Post time for the Kentucky Oaks is at approximately 5:12 p.m.

Grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. First live race post time is 6:35 p.m. Advance wagering is available all day on Friday for Saturday’s entire Churchill Downs card.

Party at the Park features live music by Party Machine and $2 drink specials from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Also, it’s the first Friday Night Frenzy with 95.9 The Ranch. Every Friday in May is Friday Night Frenzy. Fans can stop by the Courtyard of Champions to register to play Chucko’s Pick at the Park for a chance to win up to $2,500 in the Lone Star Park Money Machine!*

*Must be 21 years of age or older to enter the Money Machine. 

Saturday, May 6 

Bar & Book opens at 8:30 a.m. to accommodate patrons playing the Churchill Downs card.

Kentucky Derby Hat Contest

Wear your favorite Kentucky Derby hat and enter our annual Kentucky Derby Day Hat Contest. We will be awarding two (2) Grand Prizes* for (1) one $500 prize for "The Most Stylish" and (1) one $500 prize for "The Most Creative" Kentucky Derby Hats. Plus, three additional hats will receive a "Honorable Mention" prize. Judging begins at 3:00 p.m. in our Courtyard of Champions. This year’s celebrity judges are Hilary Kennedy, Co-Host of CW 33 Eye Opener; Tanya Foster, Lifestyle Blogger representing The Bird’s Eye View; and Alex Young, Lifestyle Blogger representing The Black Tie Dinner.

Family Fun Park 

Kentucky Derby Day is a family fun event, so bring the kids out to enjoy our Family Fun Park from noon to 5:00 p.m. featuring bounce houses, pony rides and a petting zoo.

Live Music in the Courtyard 

Incognito will perform live on the Courtyard of Champions stage from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Stick around and watch the live PPV World Middleweight Championship bout between Canelo Alvarez & Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.*
 *$20 food & beverage minimum per person required after 8:00 p.m. for PPV events. 

Sunday, May 7 

Bar & Book opens at 10:30 a.m. for simulcasting.

$200,000 Steve Sexton Mile (G3)
The Derby weekend party continues on Sunday with the $200,000 Steve Sexton Mile (G3). It is Lone Star Park’s featured race which was formerly named the Texas Mile. The Sexton Mile will headline the nine race card Sunday. The Grade 3 event has attracted a 2016 Kentucky Derby contender Mor Spirit. He ships in for the race by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Hall of Fame jockey, Mike Smith has been named to ride Mor Spirit.

$25,000 Guaranteed Late Pick-4
The late Pick-4 wager Sunday is guaranteed at $25,000. It covers the final four races on the card beginning with the sixth race. The wager includes the Grade 3 - $200,000 Steve Sexton Mile which is the scheduled eighth race.


Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, a Class I racetrack operated by Texas Partners LSP and GG LSP. The track offers a 50-day 2017 Thoroughbred Season, which opens Thursday, April 20 and concludes on Sunday, July 30.  Live racing will be held three days a week, Friday at 6:35 p.m., Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (except Triple Crown Days May 6, May 20 & June 10 which have a 1:35 p.m. start) and Sundays at 2:35 p.m. Live racing will be held on select Thursdays at 6:35 p.m. (April 20, June 15 & July 27). The racing program on Memorial Day, May 29, will start at 2:35 p.m. A special twilight program will be held at 5:00 p.m. both on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4 (Lone Stars & Stripes Fireworks Celebration).
