GIRVIN RETURNS TO RACING IN GRADE III SEXTON MILE

For Immediate Release
Sunday, April 22, 2018

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (April 22, 2018) –Girvin, winner of the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational last July, will return to racing in the Grade 3, $200k Sexton Mile at Lone Star Park on Sunday, May 6. “He is training great,” said owner Brad Grady who attended the races at Lone Star Park Thursday. “He had some great workouts at Keeneland. We are going to run him in the Sexton Mile and if he does well, we’ll run him in Stephen Foster.”

Girvin took Grady, a local Texan, for a ride on the derby trail last year winning both of Louisiana’s Kentucky Derby preps last year, the Grade 2 Risen Star and the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Those efforts put him atop the Kentucky Derby point’s leaderboard, but unfortunately was dealing with an unresolved quarter crack at race time and finished 13th. With the foot issue out of the way, he came back strong finishing by a nose to Irap in the Ohio Derby in June before his victory in the Haskell a month later.

Back in training at Fair Grounds since early March, Girvin moved to Keeneland early this month where he recorded two identical 5 furlong works, one on April 16, and again April 22, both were clocked at 1:00.20.

Grady is from Covington just south of Cleburne. He has several horses stabled at Lone Star Park with trainer Bret Calhoun, which he races there each year including a local fan favorite Supermason. Supermason bested a field 10 in the Bluebonnet Stakes Thursday, his third consecutive victory in the meet opening stakes.
