SEXTON MILE WINNER BEE JERSEY WINS $1.2 MILLION METROPOLITAN MILE (G1) AT BELMONT PARK TODAY

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (June 9, 2018) – With his last “prep” being the $200,000 Steve Sexton Mile (G3) at Lone Star Park on May 6, Charles E. Fipke’s Bee Jersey trained by Steve Asmussen won the $1.2 million Metropolitan Mile (G1) at Belmont Park today. The race was part of the Belmont Stakes Day undercard.

This was the second consecutive horse to win the Sexton Mile and then go on to win the Metropolitan. Bob Baffert and Mike Smith won both races last year with Mor Spirit.

Jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. guided Bee Jersey to victory in the Sexton Mile last month in gate to wire fashion and that same strategy worked for him again today for the win in the Metropolitan.

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen had just won his career 8,000th victory the day before the Sexton Mile last month. His win here with Bee Jersey was his 8,006th.

Congratulations to Bee Jersey and Steve Asmussen.
